A Collaborative Initiative
The American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the AAUW Long Beach (CA) Branch, with the support of the Mooneen Lecce Giving Circle, launched a large-scale grassroots initiative to train and empower 5,000 women by 2021 to negotiate their salaries and benefit packages with confidence. The initiative also aims to help close the gender pay gap in Long Beach.
In 2015, median earnings in California’s 47th Congressional District, which includes Long Beach, were $48,035 for men compared to $42,002 for women — an earnings ratio of just 87 percent. While Long Beach has a smaller gender pay gap than the national average, a 13 percent gap is still far from gender parity.

Why is negotiation so important? AAUW’s research on the gender pay gap shows that, one year out of college, women are already paid significantly less than their male counterparts. Women who work full time take home 80 cents for every dollar a full-time male worker is paid. And over a lifetime, those lost potential earnings add up.
Women who negotiate increase their potential to earn higher salaries and better benefits packages. By negotiating fair and equitable salaries, you’ll be better able to pay off loans, buy the things you want and need, and even save for retirement.
